Northern Saskatchewan 2009 - August

Young bald eagle. Just prior, he emptied his bowel over the edge of the nest, narrowly missing me.

Dutch oven with coals on lid.

Bannock baked in Dutch oven. The biscuit contains cinnamon, raisins, brown sugar, butter. Mmm ... good!

After trying several dome tents over the years (for comfort), back to A-frame for superior water shedding.

A nice sheltered camp site from all but an atypical wind direction.

Typical dry sandy soil covered with crunchy "Grey Reindeer Lichen".

Lake trout, a nice 18 incher.

My shower. Safer than wading on a rocky lake bottom, and better than rinsing soap into lake.

Can you see the Spruce Grouse?

Common Loon.

My firewood supply.

Northern Pike, typical 18 incher, just the right size for supper.

Mounds of pine cone leftovers on a Red Squirrel's midden.

Rained steadily for five days. Wet wood on top dries out as it protects the fire from rain.

Pretty orange-topped lichen on boulders - Red Pixie-Cup ("British Soldiers").

Beautiful moon rise. Later tonight a big bull moose comes through camp.  He stood in the nearby pond eating plant growth under the water, the water splashing off his antlers every time he raised his head.  When walking back into the bush in the dark he was heading directly for my tent, so I yelled "Go around" at which point he ran.  I could hear him crashing through brush and trees until he was quite far away.  We were probably both equally startled.

Fading light at sunset with deep deep blue sky and matching water.
