Alberta 2013 - early April

This is close to where I live.  I like to walk from my car a few kilometres in the early morning darkness to get in position to view and hear a wide variety of sights and sounds. I often come on moose and mule deer browsing near the creek before daylight.  Usually coyotes yap and howl in different parts of the valley as the sun rises.  One day I was sitting at my breakfast fire shortly after daybreak and all of sudden three bull moose came down the far side of the mile-wide valley.  They trotted down the slope, across the flats and crossed the frozen creek within 100 metres downwind.   I carefully walked to the edge of the open area and watched them for several minutes as they slowly took their time to fade into the bush beside me.  (Of course I didn't have my camera.)  About an hour later two coyotes ambled back and forth on the opposing valley wall hunting for mice.  As I watched, one lay down and promptly went to sleep in the sunshine.  The other coyote moseyed around the bigger and older companion, seemingly waiting impatiently for his companion to get up and move on.  All the while, I enjoyed my breakfast of a sandwich grilled on the hot coals and green tea made using melted snow.  An awesome day.  No better way to get some fresh air, exercise and peaceful solitude.
