Northern Saskatchewan 2014 - Refrigerators

In  order to keep food cool, a hole dug into the moss in the shade and covered with a thick layer of moss is very effective, maintaining refrigeration temperature usually in the range 4 to 8°C.  I use a small plastic cooler because of problems with mice getting into the items.  I do not carry temperature sensitive food, but these fridges are useful for storing open canned meat, used shortening, in-use butter, fresh berries or fresh fish or game.

Stair-step Moss "Fridge" dug down to the water level of  a nearby lake.

Sphagnum moss in a muskeg close to a camp.  This type of moss is the most insulative.
